Navigating Teal Waters: SERES' New Structure, Challenges, and Insights

In our ongoing journey to embrace the Teal organizational paradigm, SERES has undergone some profound changes in the way we structure and operate. Today, we'll take a closer look at how we've restructured ourselves under the Teal model, the challenges we've faced, and the valuable insights we've gained along the way.

How We Work Today:

Under the Teal model, SERES has transitioned into three main circles that define our operational focus:

  1. Transformative Experiences

  2. Ulew Fuego

  3. Vibrant Organization

One of the fundamental shifts in our approach has been the adaptation of our meeting cadence within these circles. Instead of sticking to a rigid schedule, we've adopted a more flexible approach, allowing us to meet as needed. This flexibility ensures that our meetings are purposeful and efficient, aligning with the principles of self-management.

As we continue to adapt to the changing times, SERES now operates as a fully remote organization. However, we recognize the importance of coming together as a team. To foster collaboration and connection, we convene for working sessions with the entire team twice a month. These sessions serve as a valuable opportunity for us to strengthen our bonds and work towards our common goals.

Additionally, we've introduced some essential tools to guide our Teal journey, including the SERES compass (brújula), Teal board guide, and a comprehensive compensation philosophy. These tools have become our compass, helping us navigate the uncharted waters of Teal with clarity and purpose.

Challenges:

Transitioning to a Teal organization hasn't been without its challenges. One of the most significant hurdles we've encountered is the process of self-management and integrating new members into our information systems. It's a learning curve that requires patience and continuous support as we adapt to this new way of working.

Another challenge lies in ensuring that the Teal model remains culturally and locally relevant. We aim to avoid it feeling like a transplant from the north and strive to incorporate the unique knowledge and culture of our local context.

Giving and receiving ongoing feedback has also been a challenge as we nurture a culture of self-management. Managing our defenses and building the confidence to make decisions independently requires a shift in mindset for everyone involved.

Insights:

Despite the challenges, SERES has achieved significant milestones on our Teal journey. Here are some insights into what has worked well for us:

  • Active participation in establishing our annual budget has promoted transparency and accountability.

  • We've ensured that information is readily available to all team members, fostering a culture of openness and access to knowledge.

  • Regular Teal footprint assessments help us stay on track and evaluate our progress.

  • Promoting self-management and wholeness practices has enhanced engagement and well-being.

  • Flexibility has been our ally. We've tried different approaches and adapted to what the organization asks and needs, rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all solution.

  • The creation of a Señor/a SERES role allows us to include the voices and perspectives of the organization itself, ensuring that everyone has a seat at the table.

As we continue to navigate the Teal waters, we're committed to learning, growing, and evolving. The challenges we face are opportunities for growth, and the insights we gain guide us toward a future where SERES thrives as a truly Teal organization, embracing self-management, purpose, and wholeness at its core.
