Educational Aquaponics

The control a.k.a. the standard tomato growing method

In the last month or so, I have received a few comments through the blog asking how the aquaponics system is coming along. The answer is…really well. Apart from being a home to our 15+ rapidly growing tilapia, rampant lettuce and tomato plants and 1 resident turtle, the system has proven an excellent educational tool for all manner of visitors to the Casa Del Nino’s. From the local TV channel to the children, visiting school groups and neighbours – everyone has questions, everyone wants to learn. It has proven to be an excellent way to teach about the concepts that we are trying to put into practice here: sustainability, permaculture, organic agriculture…something that people can see and touch and play with.
But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words – so here are some images from the aquaponics system that we have set up here at the Casa Del Nino’s.
